Fight Periodontitis with Periodontal Maintenance

Gum disease has become increasingly common, with just over half of Americans 30 years and older, and over 70% of adults over the age of 65 who currently have advanced gum disease. Gum disease generally manifests itself in the form infection, sensitivity, puffiness, or inflammation of the gums. If left untreated long enough, gum disease can begin to deteriorate the jawbone, which can result in loss of teeth or the need for extensive dental surgery. There are also many significant health issues associated with gum disease, including diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.

One of the best ways to address this issue and prevent periodontal disease from ever developing is through periodontal maintenance therapy. Periodontal maintenance simply means scheduling regular dental cleanings. While everyone should have a dental or periodontal visit every six months for regular check ups and cleanings, patients who are more susceptible to periodontal disease or who have previously been treated for gum disease should schedule periodontal maintenance visits every three months. That said, the frequency will vary from patient to patient, and may be determined by factors such as what type of periodontal diseases you have, the rate at which you develop plaque, what type of treatments you have had, and how successful those treatments have been.

At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations and providing the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients.

If you are scheduled for periodontal maintenance, or if you have any questions about the procedure, please contact our staff who will be happy to answer any questions or help you set up an appointment.

Typical Visit

Your periodontal maintenance will begin with a thorough examination to determine the overall health of your teeth, which will be measured by testing your gums and measuring the depth of your periodontal pockets. Your periodontist may also take X-rays in order to assess the health of your jaw. Once this is completed, your periodontist will begin a deep cleaning.

If you are scheduled to have a periodontal maintenance exam, you can expect your periodontist and the team to:

  • Discuss your oral health history (for new clients) as well as any recent changes to your mouth
  • Perform a thorough examination of your mouth tissues
  • Take measurements of the depth of your pockets
  • Discuss and provide an overall assessment of your current oral hygiene habits
  • Removal of any plaque or tartar that may have formed
  • Take X-rays in order to further evaluate the current state of your teeth and bone
  • Conduct a thorough examination to determine if any decay or other dental issues have developed
  • Conduct an assessment of your occlusal bite
  • Prescribe and/or application of medication as necessary

Benefits of Maintenance

There are several benefits that are associated with having regular periodontal maintenance, including the following:

  • Regular periodontal maintenance actively slows gum disease from progressing
  • Periodontal maintenance reduces or eliminates the inflammation and irritation your gums have been experiencing, which gives them a chance to fully heal
  • Severe plaque and tartar buildup are removed, which is not possible with traditional at home care techniques
  • Regular maintenance allows your periodontist to keep better track of your general health and catch problems before they develop into something more serious, such as stroke, diabetes, or heart disease

Maintaining Your Periodontal Therapy

The most important thing you can do to avoid developing gum disease in the future is to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice daily and for at least two minutes each time and continue flossing regularly. If you have not yet, talk to Dr. Seda or your dentist about recommended antimicrobial mouth rinses.

Along with these important at home care practices, the best thing you can do to continue enjoying your healthy smile is to schedule regular visits. During these routine checkups, your periodontist will be able to conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop. By maintaining these habits, you will be well on your way to preventing additional issues from developing.

Costs Associated with Periodontal Maintenance

Like most dental procedures, the final cost will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.

Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.
