Guided Tissue Regeneration for Tissue Growth

Guided tissue regeneration refers to a dental technique that helps address periodontal issues by directing growth of gingival tissue and new bone through the use of barrier membranes. GTR is most often used to assist in helping patient grow new jawbone tissue. By facilitating this growth, your mouth will develop a more stable and sturdy root, which will increase your overall oral health and decrease the likelihood of your tooth either falling out or needing to be extracted.

Guided Tissue Regeneration is most often used to treat patients who are suffering from advanced periodontal disease. Periodontal disease begins when the gums become infected. If left untreated long enough, the disease progresses into periodontitis, which begins to form deep pockets around the tooth. These pockets are susceptible to gathering bacteria, which can trigger an inflammatory response in the body, which in turn begins the process of jawbone deterioration.

At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations and providing the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients.

If you are scheduled for a procedure that requires guided tissue regeneration, or if you have any questions about GTR, please contact our staff who will be happy to answer any questions or help you set up an appointment.

How Guided Tissue Works

Prior to using Guided Tissue Regeneration, your periodontist will lift the gum in the area of question, and the bacteria that has developed in the area will be removed. Next, your periodontist will place a small amount of bone powder into the area that the bone was lost, and cover it with a dissolvable membrane. This will provide the space for the bone to begin healing itself and start the regeneration process. Once fully healed, the membrane and any stitches that were placed will either dissolve or be removed.

By having a procedure to address your periodontal disease and in conjunction with the use of Guided Tissue Regeneration, you will dramatically decrease the likelihood of developing additional issues in the future, and can also reverse your periodontal disease.

Applied to Bone Grafts

Typically, the bone grafting procedure entails transferring one portion of bone from one part of your body, or sometimes from a donor or animal, using a unique grafting material. This material is put directly onto your jawbone. Healing will begin right after your dentist completes the bone graft procedure, and is facilitated through the Guided Tissue Regeneration process. It is not uncommon for this process to take several months before a patient is capable of growing viable new bone in the area where the bone graft occurred. Once a patient begins to grow new bone, the dentist will test it to be sure that the implant will stay stable and secure once it is implanted.

Your dentist will start the process of the dental implant after they are certain that the bone is strong and secure enough and has thoroughly inspected the area. The use of guided tissue regeneration will help improve the healing process and increase the likelihood that your dental bone graft will be successful.

Caring for Post Procedural Care

Depending upon the type of procedure you have performed in conjunction with the Guided Tissue Regeneration, you will likely have a specific recovery plan provided by your periodontist, which you should follow as closely as possible.

Beyond taking these basic precautions, it is also important to remember that the reason most people end up needing procedures that utilize Guided Tissue Regeneration is because they have neglected their oral health. As such, the most important thing you can do following your procedure is to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice daily and for at least two minutes each time and continue flossing regularly. If you have not yet, talk to Dr. Seda or your dentist about a recommended antimicrobial mouth rinse.

Along with these important at home care practices, the best thing you can do to continue enjoying your healthy smile is to schedule regular visits every six months. During these routine checkups, your periodontist can conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop. By maintaining these habits, you will be well on your way to preventing additional issues from developing in the future.

Guided Tissue Regeneration Cost

Like most dental procedures, the final cost will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.

Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.
