Precision Focused 3D Printed Surgical Guides

3D printed surgical guides have become increasingly popular in improving the accuracy and precision of the surgery during the dental implant process. Traditionally, dental implants are placed “free hand”, whereby the surgeon aims to place the implant in the best possible position in the jaw, using hand eye coordination as the method by which to guide the procedure. Now, thanks to advancements in cone beam computed tomography and digital technology, 3D printed surgical guides can be used to perform this process This results in greatly reduced surgery time, as well as more precise and accurate implant placement. This improves long term outcomes significantly.

The process begins with collecting digital records from the patient, including a digital scan/impression of the teeth, and CT scan of the jaw. These are then combined in a 3D software to render a virtual model of the patient’s gum, surrounding bone, and teeth. The surgeon then places the implant or implants in the correct position in the jaw within the software - performing a “virtual surgery”. This information is then sent to the 3D printer, which creates a high-resolution guide that is customized to perfectly fit the individual’s unique nouth and dental structure. This guide is then placed in the patient’s mouth during surgery, and controls the surgeons actions during the surgery, thus helping the surgeon to place the implants in the exact position in the jaw that it was planned in the software.

Cone Beam 3D imaging is a type of computer tomograph that renders 3D images of facial and oral structures to provide the oral surgeon with a clear view of the width, height, and density of the bone, as well as other relevant structures such as nerves and sinues. These images are produced by a cone beam x-ray, which takes and compiles multiple X-rays to provide a clear image for diagnosing and treating issues. Using cone beam x-rays is an essential step in diagnosing issues and creating treatment plans for these issues. By providing the surgeon with an undistorted and clear view of your teeth, sinuses, nerves, soft tissue, bone, and other structures, the surgeon will be better equipped to determine the proper size, position, and angle of the planned dental implants.

Benefits of 3D Printed Surgical Guides

The primary benefits of 3D printed surgical guides include:

  • Safe: There are no risk factors associated with creating these guides. Additionally, using his method will develop custom implants that have a greatly diminished likelihood of being positioned incorrectly or needing to be replaced.
  • Faster treatment and recovery time: Because the digital scanning process has become so much more accurate and simple, our staff has more time to spend in determining correct diagnoses and planning your treatment. This also means we are able to provide improved results quicker that will last longer, which means less time you need to spend in our office.
  • Assists with diagnosis: In addition to developing a customized implant placement that is best suited for your unique needs, a 3D implant surgical guide can also be used to determine if a sinus lift or bone graph is necessary.
  • Affordable: Patients will typically save between 50-85% when compared to traditional surgical guide options that are outsourced. Additionally, the cost of the procedure is set at a fixed price, no matter how many implants are needed.

Thanks to improvements in digital manufacturing, 3D printing has never been more cost-effective, precise, or beneficial. Our office is proud to offer advanced solutions that provide you with precise and effective oral care that will ensure your implant-supported restoration will be long-lasting, comfortable, and cost affordable.

3D Printing Results in Faster Production

The ability to design 3D surgical guides ensures that our staff can plot the location and borders quickly and effectively. It also ensures that the guide will be designed in a manner that has taken the surrounding areas that will be involved into consideration as well. Once the design is finished, the STL file is exported to the printer.

The guide will need holes that accept a predetermined hole or glued-in metal sleeve. This guide will be used to determine the exact location and exact depth for placement of the implant. Once the location and depth of the implant has been determined, dual scans can be taken that will show the patients teeth while they are wearing the implant or denture followed by a scan where they are not. This before and after scanning process provides important additional information that will be used to inform the treatment plan.
