The Story of Dr. Seda’s Training

The College Years
University of California
Los Angeles

Dr. Seda’s education and training for his chosen profession began at the University of California, Los Angeles.  As an undergraduate student, he chose the field of Psychobiology as his primary focus of study.  This field merged the disciplines of Psychology (the study of human mind/behavior) with the discipline of Neuroscience (the study of the structure and function of the nervous system and brain).  This fascinating field proved to be a valuable gateway for Dr. Seda, as it allowed extensive access to the limitless opportunities an institution like UCLA Medical Center and the greater scientific community offered him.  This study would also come to prove highly useful later in his career working as a Periodontist, as much of his studies were aimed not just at understanding people, their motivations, fears, challenges, and anxieties, but also how to play a pivotal role in helping people to overcome these challenges.  They help in delivering the healing and care patients so dearly required, but were so fearful to face.

Dental School
Harvard School
of Dental Medicine

Upon arrival at Harvard, Dr. Seda was blessed to be surrounded by some of the most gifted and talented classmates in the world.  The first two years at Harvard were committed to medical school, where medical and dental students studied the body, its processes.  Intensive training in human anatomy and physiology were ingrained on a fundamental level.  In being a student at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, the curriculum helped graduates think like physicians, giving key insight into how conditions of the oral cavity can impact general systemic health.  In the third year of dental school, the art of learning dentistry began.  Top notch training labs, simulators, and a world class faculty were all crucial in shaping Dr. Seda’s clinical experience as a healer and clinician.  Research was another fundamental of training at Harvard.  Dr. Seda worked closely with the Oral Surgery Department at the Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was first author on a study that examined how panoramic x-rays could be used to predict nerve injuries during surgery.  Beyond the academic side of being at Harvard, this experience helped Dr. Seda learn the importance of working well with others, learning from others, and sharing information in a way to change people’s lives for the better.

Residency
Columbia University College
of Dental Medicine

In New York, Dr. Seda received his specialty training in periodontics (the treatment of the tissues supporting and around the teeth) and implantology (the specialty of replacing teeth with prosthetic dental implants).  This three-year program included intensive exposure to clinical cases, extensive study of all previous relevant research in the field, and how to treat the most complicated cases in dentistry.  Dr. Seda also received a Master’s degree during this time, due to the research he conducted.  This research was done under the guidance and mentorship of one of the most prominent dental researchers on Earth, Dr. Panos Papapanou.  Together they examined the impact of oral infections on systemic health.  Through this intense, multi-year research project, Dr. Seda has become an authority on the mechanisms by which oral disease can affect the various systems of the body.  Understanding this key link helps our team to provide recommendations that take each person’s unique medical situation into consideration, to maximize the best possible results, under the safest possible conditions.

Our Commitments to You

Our Commitment to Taking the Journey Together

Our entire team recognizes how stressful and scary dentistry can be for some patients.  Previous history and experiences can color and affect the way we all feel about going to the dentist.  It is our commitment to empathize and be sensitive to each individual’s perception of their dental experience, and make it as smooth and comfortable for everyone.  We will not hurry; we will listen and explain.  We will not gloss over details; we will try to get every detail and nuance of your case just right.  And we will be open to feedback and suggestions of how we can do this better, each time, every time. In doing so, we will go down the journey of achieving optimal oral health as partners, on step at a time, until we reach our goal.  A healthier, more comfortable you.

Our Commitment to Transparency and Clarity

Everyone learns and processes information differently.  This is especially true when it comes to trying to understand health concerns and treatment, whereas others prefer the steps written down in letter form.  Some people benefit from visual aids to learn about their condition, while others prefer slow, thoughtful explanation from the doctor or team member.  Some people just want the simple basics of what is happening and how to fix it, while others prefer step by step details, and feel re-assured as they learn more about what is wrong and how to fix it.  We deeply respect this difference in people and are committed to identifying where each patient is on this spectrum.  Once we learn how you as the patient prefers the information presented, we can help you understand what needs to be done, in a way that is customized for you.  Everything will be explained to each patient’s satisfaction.  That way, we can all enter into the journey knowing that the process has been transparent and clear.

Our Commitment to Utilizing the Best Available Technology and Innovations

It is our intent to leverage and implement the most cutting edge and updated technology throughout the patient experience in our practice.  Whether that is through using digital forms, computer guided surgical simulation/planning technology, the latest advances in 3D modeling and imaging, or the most advanced techniques.  Each step of the patient experience will be easier, less invasive, better planned, and better understood and communicated, because of our constant commitment to researching and implementing proven and innovative technologies, in the most targeted and efficient way.  This is all aimed to create a deep, palpable impact on not only the final outcome of treatment, but also on the subjective experience of the patient undergoing that treatment as well.  You will feel that you are being treated in a state-of-the-art setting, by state-of-the-art people, that want to deliver the best possible outcome and experience.

Our Commitment to Treating Our Patients as a Sophisticated System/Organism, not just a Mouth

While dental problems can result in pain and dysfunction in the mouth, it is widely accepted that dental problems can have direct and severe impact on general systemic health.  Studies have now connected oral disease to other systemic issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, dementia, pre-term birth, erectile dysfunction, cardiac disease, and many more.  Dr. Seda’s experience in research within this field has paved the way for his understanding of this connection, and its importance will be shared with all our clients for whom it is relevant.  Many of our patients will present with complicated medical histories, medications, and health conditions.  The medical school training and research Dr. Seda has done over the years will play a huge role in these issues being managed carefully, thoughtfully, and with precision.  This will ensure a safe and secure backdrop for customized treatment plans and personalized recommendations, for each patient.

Our Commitment to Personalized and Customized Treatment Options and Service

Each individual has different goals, beliefs, and personal attitudes towards their body, medicine, and the way they these elements can be merged together.  While one person may prefer a more proactive, holistic approach to dealing with a health problem, others may prefer a more conservative, staged approach to the same issue.  And while there are risks and benefits to any possible route we take with your care, it is our steadfast commitment to communicate and present things in a collaborative and clear way, so that we can come to understand the best route for each patient.  Tailoring and customizing treatment options for patients is an art that we take very seriously.  This art factors in a patients beliefs, preferences, and ideals.  Getting to that understanding requires clear, patient, and communication between our team of doctor, assistants, administrators, and of course, you the patient.  We use visual aids, computer simulations, and various communication methods to draw out from each patient, how they would best like to approach their body.  We deeply believe that the more we learn about each patient and their preferences, the better we are as healers.  From there, we can personalize the treatment approach, the medications we prescribe or don’t prescribe, and the time frame of the treatment we are recommending, to meet the needs and wishes of each individual patient.  The art of personalization is one we take to heart very seriously, and we are constantly cultivating that art to provide personalized outcomes for our patients.

Our Commitment to Patient Involvement in the Decision Making and Treatment Process

It is our deep belief that an educated patient makes better decisions for themselves on their road towards optimal oral health.  It is our commitment to take the time to explain what each individuals problem is, how it occurred, and what the various treatment options are to address it.  It is our commitment to invest the time and resources to convey these elements clearly and articulately to each patient.  We have observed how this investment facilitates and empowers our patients to make the best decisions for themselves in their journey with us.

Our Commitment to Aligning Patient Expectations with Outcomes

Our goal is to ensure that throughout the journey of treatment with our practice, that every patient has realistic and appropriate expectations about what can and cannot be achieved in their care.  These expectations are then connected with the outcomes that treatment can achieve.  It requires us to clearly explain and outline the process, the goals, and what can happen throughout the journey.  When patient expectations are aligned with the outcomes we achieve together, it is a win-win for everyone – the patient, the treatment team, and everyone else that is involved.  We want to have happy patients.  It is what matters the most to us over everything else.   If, however, during the journey, something unexpected occurs, this can leave people disappointed and frustrated.  Avoiding these pitfalls requires foresight, experience, and thoughtfulness, and communication skills – all of which are elements that Dr. Seda and his team aim to exemplify and express throughout the patient experience.
