Occlusal Adjustment for Bite Complications

Ideally, when you close your mouth, your top teeth and your bottom teeth should evenly touch and with equal pressure. Many people experience issues where certain teeth touch harder or do not fit as perfectly as they should. This type of imperfect bite caused by a variety of interference is referred to as “malocclusion.” These interferences can occur naturally, accumulate over time, result from an accident, or even develop due to other dental procedures, such as bridges, extractions, crowns, or fillings.

Left untreated, malocclusion can result in significant issues, including the development of fractures of the teeth, which can then lead to tooth loss, receding gumlines, and even bone loss. Malocclusion can also create increased strain on the neck and jaw, which can trigger headaches in some patients.

Fortunately, our team can provide an occlusal adjustment, which helps address the cause of your bite problems, and provides a quick and relatively simple solution. At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations and providing the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients.

If you are scheduled for an occlusal adjustment or have any questions about the procedure, please contact our staff who will be happy to answer any questions or help you set up an appointment.

Bite Adjustment Process

There are several different types of occlusal adjustments that can be performed depending upon your specific needs, which include the following:

  • Reconstruction: For reconstruction procedures, your dentist will focus on repairing cracked or broken teeth. They may also fill or replace cavities if necessary and/or place a crown or use bonding agents.
  • Reshaping: Reshaping procedures require your dentist to drill and fill any uneven, rough, or misshapen surfaces on your tooth or multiple teeth. As they progress through the reshaping process, they will periodically check your bite until your occlusion is properly aligned.
  • Splints or night guards: Periodontists will sometimes recommend using night guards or splints in order to improve and maintain your teeth alignment. First, an impression of your mouth will be made so the splint or night guard can be modified to fit your specific needs. The majority of people only wear guards at night, especially for those who suffer from issues related to TMJ, but there are instances when guards can also be worn during the day.
  • Orthodontic treatment: Your periodontist may recommend the use of retainers, braces, or Invisalign to reposition and realign your teeth

Post Procedural Care

The most important thing you can do following your procedure is to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice daily and for at least two minutes each time and continue flossing regularly.

Along with these important at home care practices, the best thing you can do to continue enjoying your healthy smile and ensure that your bite remains properly aligned, is to schedule regular visits every six months. During these routine checkups, your periodontist can conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop. By maintaining these habits, you will be well on your way to preventing additional issues from developing in the future.

Occlusal Bite Adjustment Cost

Like most dental procedures, the final cost will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.

Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.
