Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique
Many patients choose to undergo Pinhole Gum Surgery because it is a less invasive procedure that works wonders in correcting patients who have receding gum lines. Because Pinhole Gum Surgery is performed without incisions, the procedure is less painful and the recovery time much faster than gum grafts.
Your periodontist will use the Pinhole Surgical Technique to make a small hole 6-7 millimeters above your mucogingival junction in your gumline. Next, your periodontist will reposition your gums with specialized instruments into the correct position. Finally, your periodontist will place collagen strips, which will support and bulk up the area, onto the original point of incision on the gum. The number of pinholes is determined by how many of your teeth need attention.
If your gums have started to recede, your periodontist may recommend Pinhole Surgery. When gums begin to recede from the teeth, your teeth become more exposed. This presents the opportunity for bacteria to build up in your teeth, which can lead to periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can create much larger and more serious issues if it is not treated early. At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations and providing the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients.
If you are scheduled for a pinhole surgical technique procedure, or if you have any questions about the procedure, please contact our staff who will be happy to answer any questions or help you set up an appointment.

Chao Pinhole Effectiveness
More than 95% of pinhole surgeries are effective, which is the same success rate as traditional grafting techniques. Compared to gum grafts, pinhole surgery is less painful and requires less time recovering. The International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry published the pinhole technique because it is consistently successful.
Causes of Recession
A larger area of your teeth become exposed to capturing bacteria when your gums recede from your teeth. Periodontal disease occurs when this bacteria builds up. If not treated early, the disease can cause more serious and complicated problems to develop. While it is true that as people get older, gum recession becomes more frequent, issues beyond age can lead to receding gumlines.
Pinhole vs Grafting
The traditional method for restoring gum tissue and ensuring that the gums do not recede further is called gum grafting. This requires the removal of tissue from an unaffected area of the mouth, and then grafting it onto the area that is affected. This procedure requires more healing time and can be more painful than the Pinhole Surgical Technique because it entails cutting and stitches.
Pinhole Recovery Time
Pinhole Surgical Technique is quicker, less painful, and requires less recovery time than traditional gum grafting. After a Pinhole Surgical Technique procedure, your gums will heal much faster and you will not have to alter your diet like you would after having a gum graft.
Post Procedure Care
The most important thing you can do following your procedure is to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice daily and for at least two minutes each time and continue flossing regularly. If you have not yet, talk to Dr. Seda or your dentist about a recommended antimicrobial mouth rinse.
Along with these important at home care practices, the best thing you can do to continue enjoying your healthy smile is to schedule regular visits every six months. During these routine checkups, your periodontist can conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop. By maintaining these habits, you will be well on your way to preventing additional issues from developing in the future.
Procedural Cost
Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network. Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements.
