Periodontal Maintenance Visit

3 months after the laser appointment, you will have your first cleaning. This allows your dental hygienist to clean all areas of your mouth that are building up plaque, and ensures the best possible outcome after the laser procedure. Thorough home care instructions are also re-enforced at this time. This visit usually takes approximately 60 minutes.

Laser Gum Candidates

Laser therapy is a unique approach to cleaning tooth pockets and encourage new bone growth, as well as avoid the need for gum surgery. This therapy can also be an effective treatment option for the following:

  • A crown lengthening procedure to allow dentists to access a crown that has descended into the gum.
  • A biopsy to remove abnormal samples of soft tissue from the mouth. The sample of soft tissue can then be tested for cancer.
  • A laser frenectomy procedure to remove the muscle tissue between teeth. The frenulum can cause issues like gum recession and extra space to occur.
  • The laser removal of tissue buildup that occurs after operations or other tissue damage.
  • To relieve localized hemostasis.

Laser Gum Treatment Process

P. gingivitis bacteria is the most common culprit of gum disease. Laser gum therapy uses a special laser with a specific wavelength to pinpoint and destroy this bacteria. This eliminates the need for traditional hand tools that would be used to scrape calculus from your teeth.

During the procedure, a fiber that is roughly the thickness of three human hairs is inserted into the affected pocket of the gum. This ultrasonic root cleaner works to kill bacteria, infected tissue, and plaque buildup.

The laser energy also warms the blood in the pocket around the tooth and makes tissues viscous. This creates a seal around the root of the tooth to protect the pocket, which has been cleaned and disinfected from germs and plaque. Stem cells will also be stimulated to form additional collagen, connective tissue, and bone, which naturally initiates healing and regeneration of ligament and bone surrounding the tooth.

The laser therapy concentrates specifically on the diseased tissue, while keeping healthy tissue around your teeth intact. A targeted beam of light penetrates 4mm underneath the surface of the tissue to kill bacteria lodged in the crevices. Once the area has been cleaned and disinfected, a clot will form and the gum can be reattached.

Post-Therapy Care

One of the biggest benefits of using laser gum surgery is that post-operative care is relatively minimal. The most important thing you can do following your procedure is to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice daily and for at least two minutes each time and continue flossing regularly. If you have not yet, talk to Dr. Seda or your dentist about a recommended antimicrobial mouth rinse.

Along with these important at home care practices, the best thing you can do to continue enjoying your healthy smile is to schedule regular visits every six months. During these routine checkups, your periodontist can conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop. By maintaining these habits, you will be well on your way to preventing additional issues from developing in the future.

Gum Surgery Cost

Like most dental procedures, the final cost will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.

Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.
