Treatment options for Gum Recession

Gum recession is a common issue for many patients, and has many causes. Gum recession can develop as a result of pockets forming between teeth and gums due to repeated or regular gum infections, genetics, and previous orthodontic therapy. Gum recession will increase as infected or diseased gum tissue dies. The gum can eventually recede all the way to the root of the tooth when left untreated for extended periods of time.

Unfortunately, gum recession often occurs slowly and over such a long period of time that many patients do not realize that there is a problem until it is has reached an advanced stage. By this time, the tooth root is exposed and susceptible to infection, decay, and deterioration. Untreated gum disease can lead to jawbone deterioration, and is the most common cause of tooth loss among adults. Additionally, untreated periodontal diseases can result in other associated health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations and providing the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients.

Common Causes of Gum Recession

There are a variety of factors that can play a role in causing gums to recede, including the following:

  • Development of Periodontal Disease: Once bacteria begins to build-up along the gum line, it can cause periodontal disease to develop. This affliction will need to be treated immediately, as it can cause excessive bleeding and plaque build-up below the gum line. Patients who have reached this stage of gum disease will need to schedule an initial series of deep cleanings and regular checkups. Additionally, patients may need to consider tissue and root therapy, or more intensive procedures to address the disease.
  • Genetic Predisposition: Gum disease and gum recession are afflictions that some patients may be genetically predisposed to develop. Patients should try to learn as soon as possible if this is the case for them in order to take preventative measures to lessen the impacts and learn about available treatments and procedures that can help improve the damage caused by recession or disease.
  • Malocclusion: This ailment is caused by the uneven alignment of teeth due to an incorrect bite. Patients suffering from malocclusion may notice excessive wear, tearing, and strain on teeth and gums. If left untreated or uncorrected, a patients’ gums will eventually begin to recede. This can also result in bone loss, which in turn may result in a patient losing a tooth or teeth.
  • Improper Tooth Brushing: A leading cause of gum recession is overly aggressive tooth brushing. Hard bristle toothbrushes or improper brushing techniques can actually damage the connective tissue along the gumline and cause your gums to recede. We recommend patients use a soft-bristled toothbrush and learn the proper technique for brushing to avoid any gum damage.

Treat Gum Recession

The most important thing you can do to avoid developing gum recession in the future is to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits. Maintaining these good oral hygiene habits is essential to prevent additional disease from developing. Be sure to brush twice daily and for at least two minutes each time you brush. It is also important that you maintain regular flossing habits and consider investing in antimicrobial mouth rinses if you do not currently.

Along with these important at home care practices, the best thing you can do to continue enjoying your healthy smile is to schedule regular visits every six months. During these routine checkups, your periodontist can conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop. By maintaining these habits, you will be well on your way to preventing additional issues from developing.

Treatment Cost

Like most dental procedures, the final cost will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.

Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.
