Gum Disease Therapies

Gum disease has become increasingly common. Over half of Americans 30 years and older, and over 70% of adults over the age of 65, currently have advanced gum disease. Though gum disease is usually painless and is not felt by those that suffer from it, it can manifest itself in the form infection, sensitivity, puffiness, or inflammation of the gums. If left untreated long enough, gum disease can begin to deteriorate the jawbone, and can result in loss of teeth or the need for extensive dental surgery. There are also many significant health issues associated with gum disease, including diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.

At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we are committed to helping you address gum disease and prevent gum disease from ever developing. We offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all of our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations and providing the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients.

Treating Gum Disease

The most important thing you can do to prevent gum disease from developing is to continue practicing good oral hygiene habits. Maintaining these good oral hygiene habits is essential to prevent additional disease from developing. Be sure to brush twice daily and for at least two minutes each time you brush. Also maintain regular flossing habits and consider investing in antimicrobial mouth rinses.

Along with these important at home care practices, it is also important that you continue scheduling regular visits with your periodontist. Visiting your periodontist twice a year will allow them to conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop.

Warning Signs of Gum Disease

One of the best ways to avoid developing severe gum disease is to be educated about different types of gum diseases and what symptoms are associated with them.

  • Gingivitis is the most common periodontal disease. Gingivitis develops when plaque is allowed to build up over time around the gums. Gingivitis presents itself primarily in the gums, which can become swollen, irritated, or puffy. Ignoring gingivitis can lead to periodontitis and other significant health issues. Fortunately, gingivitis is relatively easy to address through a deep cleaning.
  • Early Periodontitis occurs when the bacteria that has formed around the gum has developed in severity, which presents itself in symptoms like bleeding gums and the development of plaque below the gum line, and mild-moderate loss of bone around the teeth. When you have reached this stage of periodontal disease, more advanced treatment is usually necessary. Laser therapy, deep cleaning, or a combination of both may be recommended.
  • Advanced Periodontitis occurs when the plaque, toxins, and bacteria have built up so much that they have formed pockets between the gums and teeth, which allows additional bacteria to settle. This in turn leads to more advanced deterioration of the jawbone. If you have reached this stage of gum disease, laser therapy, deep cleaning, or a combination of both may be recommended.

Gum recession that is caused by gum disease or periodontitis is a common issue for many patients. Gum recession occurs due to pockets that have formed between teeth and gums due to repeated or regular gum infections. Gum recession will increase as infected or diseased gum tissue dies. The gums can recede all the way to the root of the tooth when left untreated for extended periods of time. Unfortunately, gum recession often occurs slowly and over such a long period of time that patients do not realize there is a problem until it is at an advanced stage. By this time, the tooth root is exposed and susceptible to infection, decay, and deterioration.

If you are experiencing any of the aforementioned issues, it is important to treat the issue as soon as possible. Untreated gum disease can lead to jawbone deterioration and is the most common cause of tooth loss among adults. Additionally, untreated periodontal diseases can result in other associated health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Treatment Cost

Like most dental procedures, the cost of your procedure will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.

Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements.
