Different Dental Sedation Levels

At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a variety of options for sedation. Our comprehensive range includes local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and intravenous sedation. The option best suited for you will be a function of the type of procedure you are electing to undergo. Typically, patients fall into one of three sedation type categories.

Mild Sedation: If the patient’s primary goal is to relieve anxiety, then mild sedation is the preferred choice. Typically, mild sedation not only lessens the anxiety level in the patient, but also decreases the level of pain associated with the procedure. In some cases, it may even eliminate the pain entirely.

Medium Sedation: For procedures that are more intensive or invasive, medium sedation is usually performed. Patients in medium sedation are in a much deeper state of relaxation. Oftentimes, this procedure has the capacity to induce some mild amnesia. Anyone choosing this as their sedation option should be made aware that driving themselves home following the procedure is not allowed. It will be necessary for you to have someone to drive you home.

Heavy Sedation: Some procedures will require that the patient be in as deep a level of sedation as is possible. The rationale for this is that anything less would make the procedure impossible to perform from a practical sense. This is referred to as Heavy Sedation. The experience for the patient is very similar to a deep sleep. The patient will likely experience amnesia and be unable to recall any events that occur following the procedure.

Types of Dental Sedation

There are two types of sedation offered: conscious sedation and general anesthesia. During conscious sedation, the patient’s consciousness is depressed for the duration of the procedure. In contrast, during general anesthesia, the patient is completely unconscious for the duration of the procedure. The patient will be unable to feel or remember any of the events associated with the procedure.

There are a variety of methods employed to provide sedation to the patient, which include:

Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous Oxide is the most commonly used and mildest administration of sedation. The administration process involves a mouthpiece that distributes nitrous oxide and puts the patient into a relaxed state. Nitrous Oxide also tends to reduce both the pain and anxiety associated with the procedure.

Oral Sedation: Oral sedation is a more intense form of sedation. Oral sedation uses anxiety medication to put the patient into a deep state of calm. This effect can last for several hours after the procedure is done. Because of this, you will not be allowed to drive yourself home following the procedure.

IV Sedation: The most intense form of sedation is Intravenous, or IV Sedation. During this process, the patient is put into a state of unconsciousness very close to sleep for a relatively long period of time. Most patients experience amnesia both before and after the procedure. Because of the intensity of the effects, the patient is not allowed to drive following the procedure, and should make arrangements to have someone available to drive them home.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

There are numerous benefits associated with sedation dentistry beyond the general reduction or even elimination of pain. Sedation can also help alleviate anxiety that some patients experience when visiting the dentist or undergoing a procedure. It can also reduce your gag reflex by numbing your gum sensitivity. Finally, because you will be more relaxed and not experiencing pain, your dentist or periodontist will have an easier time working on your mouth in an efficient and efficacious manner.

Sedation Dentistry Cost

Like most dental procedures, the final cost will be determined by a variety of factors, such as what kind of sedation you select, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.

Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.
