Tooth Extractions for Decayed, Diseased, or Broken Teeth

During an oral examination, your dentist assesses your overall oral health and will determine what, if any, procedures may be necessary to help you maintain and improve your health. Dr. Seda’s primary goal is to help patients preserve their natural teeth. However, in some cases, tooth or teeth extraction may be recommended in order to prevent further damage to the jaw and adjacent tissues/structures.

This recommendation could be the result of several factors, including severe tooth decay, advanced periodontal disease/infection, or a broken tooth that is unable to be repaired. A tooth extraction could also be recommended to make room for adult teeth or because an existing tooth is poorly positioned. You may also need an extraction to prepare for another orthodontic treatment.

At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations and providing the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients. If you have a loose or damaged teeth or wonder if a tooth extraction might be right for you, please contact our staff who will be happy to answer any questions or help you set up an appointment.

Tooth Extraction Process

During your initial consultation, your dentist will complete an oral exam to determine which procedure is best suited to address your concern, and whether or not a tooth extraction is necessary. It typically only takes a few dental appointments to complete a tooth extraction procedure.

To reduce any discomfort you may feel during a simple tooth extraction procedure, your dentist will begin by administering a local anesthetic. Once your jaw, nerves, and tissue are numb, your dentist will remove the damaged tooth. These procedures are often quick and have a short healing time.

Surgical tooth extractions and oral surgery can be more involved or complicated. During the removal of one or more teeth, your dentist will administer an anesthetic based on your comfort level. Once the patient’s anesthetic has kicked in, the identified tooth or teeth will be surgically removed. Any gaps in the gums will be sutured to help minimize bleeding and speed up the healing process.

Tooth Extraction After Care

In order to facilitate the healing process, it is essential to follow the post-procedure instructions your dentist provides you. Avoid hard foods and try to avoid physical activity for at least two or three days. It is also important that you refrain from smoking.

It is common for mild bleeding to occur following your procedure. Be sure to place a gauze over the socket and replace it every 30-45 minutes until the bleeding stops. It is also normal to experience swelling following your procedure. If you do have swelling, use ice packs for 20 minute increments, with a 20 minute break between. This type of care generally makes the swelling subside quicker.

Once you have fully recovered, the best thing you can do following this procedure is to continue practicing good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice daily and for at least two minutes each time and continue flossing regularly.

Along with these important at home care practices, the best thing you can do to continue enjoying your healthy smile is to schedule regular visits every six months. During these routine checkups, your periodontist will be able to conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop. By maintaining these habits, you will be well on your way to preventing additional issues from developing.

Tooth Extraction Dry Sockets

Dry sockets can form when the area where the extraction takes place does not form a proper blood clot. If this should occur, the healing process will take longer. Patients who have developed a dry socket will begin to feel moderate to severe throbbing pain 3-4 days after the procedure has taken place. It is also common for patients to describe developing a bad taste in their mouth. Dry sockets usually heal on their own, or may be helped by Dr. Seda placing a sedative medicine in the extraction site.

Tooth Extraction Cost

Like most dental procedures, the cost of your procedure will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.

Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements.
