Osseous surgery can refer to a number of surgeries that are focused on removing bacteria and tartar from the roots of your teeth. By reducing these deep pockets, osseous surgery helps you reclaim your oral health and prevent more severe and complicated issues from developing. Although it is referred to as a “surgery” many patients describe the process as being closer to a deep cleaning.

At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations and providing the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients.

How Osseous Surgery Helps

Osseous surgery can help address a variety of issues, including the following:

  • Reducing the Spread of Bacteria: Removes bacteria that, if left untreated, has the potential to spread throughout the body and develop into more significant health issues, including respiratory and heart disease. By removing this bacteria, you will significantly reduce the likelihood of more serious periodontal diseases from developing.
  • Prevention of Bone Loss: As the body reacts to periodontal disease with inflammatory responses, the bacteria that can generate from this response can ultimately create decay within the jaw bone, which in turn can cause teeth to loosen or even fall out. Osseous surgery will help address this issue before it develops to this critical point.
  • Improved Aesthetic Smile: Having osseous surgery will help restore your mouth to its healthy state, which in turn will improve the overall aesthetic appearance of your smile and restore your confidence.
  • Improved Ability for Self Care: When periodontal disease progresses to a certain point, it can become increasingly difficult to perform adequate oral self care. Osseous surgery will help reduce the size of the pockets that have formed between your gum and teeth, which will make brushing and flossing easier and thus help periodontal disease from developing further.

Following the Osseous Surgery

You will most likely be prescribed pain medication following your osseous surgical procedure. Be sure to take this medication as directed. Your stitches will either dissolve or be removed roughly one week after your procedure. While waiting for them to dissolve, it might help to chew on the other side of your mouth until this area feels fully healed.

You should plan on scheduling a follow up appointment one month after your surgery so your periodontist can examine your mouth and ensure you are healing properly. It is common for people to experience tooth sensitivity during this recovery stage. It is a good idea to avoid foods that are excessively hot or cold. You can also treat your tooth sensitivity with various fluoride applications. Additional periodontal surgery may also help cover the exposed roots,
which will decrease the overall sensitivity and improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile.

Along with maintain good home care practices, such as brushing and flossing twice a day, the best thing you can do to continue enjoying your healthy smile is to schedule regular visits every six months. During these routine checkups, your periodontist can conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop. By maintaining these habits, you will be well on your way to preventing additional issues from developing in the future.

The Procedure

Prior to your procedure, your periodontist will numb the area that will be addressed using alocal anesthetic. Once you are properly numbed, your periodontist will lift the gum tissue away from the area that is to be treated in order to expose the bone. Once this area is properly exposed, your periodontist will perform a deep cleaning of the roots and the bone, and the smooth out the treated areas. Due to this cleaning, the areas that have been treated will be much healthier and will make it easier for your gums to reattach themselves to your teeth. This will also make it easier for the gum tissue to be replaced.

Osseous Surgical Cost

Like most dental procedures, the final cost will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.

Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.
