Sinus Lift Treatment
Patients who have experienced the loss of teeth in their upper jaw will sometimes require a sinus lift in order to have dental implants placed. The sinus lift becomes necessary because the area where the teeth are missing begins to shrink and change shape over time. When this occurs, the sinuses will expand into the space where the bone once was. Because the dental implant requires sufficient bone to adhere, a sinus lift will allow your dentist or periodontist to move your sinus to its original location and then place additional bone in the affected area.
At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all of our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations, and provide the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients.
If you are scheduled for a sinus lift, or if you have any questions about this procedure, please contact our staff who will be happy to answer any questions or help you set up an appointment.
Reviews About Dental Implants
The Sinus Lift Procedure
Prior to the beginning of the procedure, the area is treated with a local anesthetic. In most cases, the jawbone is exposed by making small incisions in both the molar and premolar regions. The jawbone then has a small opening made into it. This allows access to the membrane that lines the sinus. That membrane in the sinus is then lifted up. The space that this action creates can then be filled with a bone grafting material, which usually comes from an external source. Synthetic materials that imitate bone formation are a viable option. Upon the completion of the implanting procedure, the opening is sutured closed, and the wound begins to heal. Over the course of several months, the bone grafting material will be integrated into and become part of the patient’s jawbone. At this point, the new sinus bone will be capable of supporting stable dental implants.
There are cases in which it is possible for both the sinus augmentation and implant placement procedures to be done together at the same time. The deciding factor is whether or not both the upper jaw ridge and the bottom of the sinus have enough bone available to insure a stable implant. If they do, then both procedures can be performed in one sitting. If this is not the case and there is not enough bone available, then two separate procedures will be required.
The first procedure will be a sinus augmentation. This will require several months for the bone graft to mature, although the exact amount of time will depend on the type of material that was used for the bone graft. Once the graft material has reached a level of maturity, the implants can then be safely installed.
A normal healing time for the sinus lift procedure is 4-9 months. After healing is completed, the dental implants can then be installed. The bone graft procedure then compensates for bone that has been lost, which in turn allows for the placement of multiple dental implants.
Materials in Sinus Lift
In order to determine what the best treatment option for an individual patient is, a thorough examination will be conducted. Your periodontist may require x-rays or CT scans to help determine the best course of action. The source of the material is typically from donors (sterilized powdered bone obtained from a reputable bone bank). At times, synthetic or materials from bovine or porcine sources can also be used.

Post-Procedure Care
Post-operative care following a sinus lift is incredibly important to reduce pain and avoid unnecessary complications, such as swelling or infection. One of the most important things to be mindful of is to avoid blowing your nose for the next month, or longer if necessary. If possible, also try to avoid sneezing as much as possible too. For those who suffer from allergies, Sudafed or a similar decongestant may be helpful.
Beyond that, immediately following your sinus lift, you will want to be attentive and make sure the gauze pad that is placed over the area where surgery occurred is kept in place and changed regularly until the bleeding stops. It is also important to avoid brushing or rinsing vigorously for some time following the surgery, as doing so can cause bleeding to start up again. It is alright to begin brushing your teeth the day after the surgery, but be mindful not to brush too hard, and purchase a soft toothbrush if you do not currently own one.
Sinus Lift Cost
Like most dental procedures, the final cost will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.
Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.
