Dental Implant Supported Dentures Eliminates Issues

Implant supported dentures are designed for patients who are frustrated with the common issues associated with traditional dentures, such as slipping and shifting, restricted diets, and general discomfort. Unlike standard dentures, which rest on the gums, implanted supported dentures are anchored to your mouth through titanium posts that allow the implant to snap into place and remain so firmly.

Implant supported dentures also provide patients the option of either keeping removable dentures that allow for nightly cleaning, or a fixed implant, which will effectively serve as permanent teeth. There are several different types of fixed prostheses which can be supported by dental implants depending upon your particular needs, such as single implants (which is a crown that is used to replace a single tooth), bridges, and All-on-4 dental implants.

At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all of our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations and providing the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients.

If you are scheduled for an implant supported denture procedure, or if you have any questions about the procedure, please contact our staff, who will be happy to answer any questions or help you set up an appointment.

Reviews About Dental Implants

Implant Supported Denture Process

The process of having implant supported dentures placed can be a rather extensive one. It will begin with an initial consultation, where your periodontist will review your medical and dental history, perform an oral examination, and take x-rays and scans as needed to determine if implant supported dentures are right for you.

After this has been determined, your periodontist will then perform an examination of your jawbone to ensure that the bone and structural integrity are strong enough to hold an implant. If you are viable candidate for this procedure, the next step will be to install a series of titanium rods into your jawbone. Titanium is used because it is the only metal that naturally integrates with the bone. Prior to implanting these posts, your periodontist will provide a local anesthetic. We offer a variety of options for sedation, which includes local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and intravenous sedation. Be sure to discuss what option you prefer with your periodontist prior to this procedure.

Next, your periodontist will implant the posts, which will be used to anchor your dentures. It is important to be aware that following the placement of these posts, you will need at least three or four months (possibly longer) to allow the titanium to integrate with your jawbone. During this healing process, we will provide a temporary set of dentures, which we will customize for your particular mouth. Once you have fully healed from this process, you will return to the office, where your implant supported dentures will be placed.

Candidates for Supported Dentures

Implant supported dentures can be an appropriate option for a wide range of patients. There are no age restrictions for who can have this procedure performed, although there are certain restrictions for patients who have significant health issues, such as heart problems, which can create possible contraindications with the surgical aspects required to perform this procedure. Implant supported dentures may also not be a viable option for patients who have insufficient jawbone mass. If you are a patient suffering from this issue, discuss whether or not a bone graft is a viable option for you.

Caring for Implant Supported Dentures

Much like your natural teeth, it is important that you maintain good daily cleaning habits. It is important that you consistently remove the appliance to clean around the gums, artificial teeth, and attachments. In addition to practicing good self-care at home, it is also important that you continue scheduling regular visits every six months. During these routine checkups, your periodontist can conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop. They will also monitor how well your implants are fitting and take x-rays when needed to ensure that your attachments, abutments, and implants are still positioned correctly.

By maintaining these habits, you will be well on your way to preventing additional issues from developing in the future.

Cost of Implant Supported Dentures

Like most dental procedures, the final cost will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.

Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.
