Bone Grafting for Replacing Lost Bone
If a patient’s tooth or teeth are missing over a long time, a dentist may need to perform a dental bone graft. Your jawbone is more likely to begin deteriorating if you have neglected to replace a missing tooth for a significant period of time. A dental bone graft is usually successful in replacing lost bone tissue.
If your periodontist has decided that a dental bone graft is necessary, they will help the bone tissue grow in the areas where your teeth are missing by using bone or synthetic materials.
At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations and providing the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients.
If you are scheduled for a dental bone graft, or if you have any questions about the procedure, please contact our staff who will be happy to answer any questions or help you set up an appointment.

How Grafting Works
Typically, the bone grafting procedure involves using material to augment/grow new bone. This material is added to your existing tissue. Healing begins right after your dentist completes the bone graft procedure. Once a patient begins to grow new bone, your periodontist will test it to be sure that the graft is stable and secure.
Once your periodontist is confident the graft is strong and secure, they can begin the process of placing dental implants.
Grafting Success
Although many patients find dental bone graft procedure’s results very successful, that success is not a promised outcome. Your graft is most likely to fail and not develop if you have or contract an infection in your mouth. If this is the case, your dentist will consult with you about other ways to treat the issue.
Even though bone grafting is becoming more and more commonplace, you should always keep in mind that it is still a major undertaking. Please reach out to your periodontist with any issues you would like to have addressed before you decide to complete the process.
Bone Grafting Benefits
There are several benefits associated with having a bone grafting procedure performed, but the most important is that having a successful bone graft will allow your dentist or periodontist to restore your smile with dental implants. A successful bone graft not only improves the aesthetic appearance of your implants, crowns, or dentures, it will also improve their overall functionality. By properly restoring the structure and the bone mass, you will decrease the likelihood of developing additional issues later.
Grafting Aftercare
Following your dental bone graft procedure, it is important to avoid touching the area where the procedure occurred, and also avoid vigorous rinsing or brushing. Your periodontist may provide antibiotics and medication to help reduce the chances of infection and alleviate any pain you may be feeling. You can generally expect the healing process to take around 7-10 days. It is normal to experience swelling following your procedure. If you do experience swelling, use ice packs for 10 minute increments with a 20 minute break between. This type of care generally makes the swelling subside quicker.
The most important thing you can do following your dental bone graft is to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice daily and for at least two minutes each time and continue flossing regularly. If you have not yet, talk to Dr. Seda or your dentist about a recommended antimicrobial mouth rinse.
Along with these important at home care practices, the best thing you can do to continue enjoying your healthy smile is to schedule regular visits every six months. During these routine checkups, your periodontist can conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop. By maintaining these habits, you will be well on your way to preventing additional issues from developing in the future.
Dental Bone Graft Cost
Like most dental procedures, the final cost will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.
Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.
