Gingivectomy for Potential Periodontal Disease Reversal

In a recent study by the American Dental Association, approximately 47% of Americans 30 years and older are suffering from some form of periodontal disease. One of the few procedures that helps address and potentially reverse periodontal disease is a gingivectomy. This may also be recommended if you have an excess of healthy gum tissue.

A gingivectomy is generally performed if your periodontist has determined that you have developed periodontal disease that is too severe to be corrected through scaling and root planing, or other standard periodontal procedures. A gingivectomy involves the removal and reshaping of your gum tissue that has become diseased in order to reduce the depth of the pockets between your gums and teeth.

At Marin Contemporary Perio and Implant Concepts, we offer a wide range of periodontal and dental implant services. We treat referred and non-referred patients in a peaceful, modern setting, and are committed to partnering with all our patients throughout their treatment. We are committed to exceeding expectations and providing the highest level of dental care to achieve the ultimate goal of optimal oral health for all of our patients.

If you are scheduled for a gingivectomy, or if you have any questions about the procedure, please contact our staff who will be happy to answer any questions or help you set up an appointment.

Gingivectomy Candidates

If you have been diagnosed with late stage gum disease—advanced periodontitis—that is no longer able to be treated without surgery, you are an ideal candidate for a gingivectomy. In these advanced cases, patients will notice that the disease has spread to the roots of the teeth and may be impacting the jawbone and muscles. This can cause severe swelling and pain in the gums, pus to form on and around the teeth and gums, and the loosening of teeth.
You may also notice a “gummy smile” which is caused by overgrown or shrinking gums, which reveal too much enamel.

Gingivectomy Procedure

Your dentist will complete an oral examination prior to any treatment to decide which type of gum surgery is best suited to address your condition. Depending on your diagnosis, your dentist will present options for sedation that will enable you to remain comfortable during the procedure.

Prior to surgery, your dentist will numb the entire area using a local anesthetic. Excess gum tissue will then be removed through a series of small incisions.

Cost of Gingivectomy Treatment

Like most dental procedures, the final cost will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.

Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.

Best Practices for Post-Gingivectomy Care

In order to facilitate the healing process following your gingivectomy, it is essential to follow the post-procedure instructions your dentist provides you. Avoid hard foods for at least two or three days and stick to a soft food diet. It is also a good idea to avoid foods or liquids that are extremely hot or extremely cold.

It is also important to avoid brushing directly on the area where the procedure occurred, and to be aware that pain or swelling in your gums following this procedure is very common. If you do have swelling, use ice packs for 20 minute increments, with a 20 minute break in between. This type of care generally makes the swelling subside quicker. Your periodontist may also prescribe pain medication or antibiotics during your recovery.

After you have fully recovered, the most important thing you can do following your gingivectomy is to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice daily and for at least two minutes each time and continue flossing regularly. If you have not yet, talk to Dr. Seda or your dentist about recommended antimicrobial mouth rinse.

Along with these important at home care practices, the best thing you can do to continue enjoying your healthy smile is to schedule regular visits every six months, although your periodontist may want to see you within three months following your gingivectomy. During these routine checkups, your periodontist can conduct deep cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, catching issues before they develop. By maintaining these habits,
you will be well on your way to preventing additional issues from developing in the future.
