How Much Does Gum Grafting Cost?

Marin Contemporary Perio & Implant Concepts

The cost of gum grafting can vary based on the severity of the problem being corrected and the number of teeth involved. Fortunately, most insurance plans cover this procedure, which will significantly reduce your out-of-pocket expenses. Certain patients may even be able to have this procedure performed for free if their plan is part of the Affordable Care Act.

Factors that may potentially affect the final cost of your procedure include:

  • How many grafts are required
  • What type of grafting material you are using
  • Where your dentist/periodontist is located geographically
  • Length of time your gums have been recessed
  • Whether additional procedures will be performed, such as gum contouring

Prior to committing to having a gum graft procedure performed, talk to your dentist or periodontist about what the anticipated costs will be and whether they offer other treatment options for treating gum recession, such as scaling and root planing or the Pinhole Surgical Technique.

Added Costs

While considering what the total cost of your gum graft will be, there are several added costs that may increase your overall bill. One of those costs is the periodontal exam most patients have prior to scheduling the gum grafting procedure. These exams may or may not include the use of X-rays and may also involve a deep cleaning. The total cost of this exam will vary depending upon where you are located geographically and which clinic you visit.

Payment Options

As mentioned earlier, gum grafts are typically covered by insurance plans, however it is important to be aware of other payment options if you do not have insurance.

FSA (Flexible Spending Accounts)

Patients with FSA’s can contribute $2,600 to their account annually. If you plan on having additional procedures performed along with your gum graft, it will be in your best interest to schedule the gum graft towards the end of the year, as funds can be made available at the start of the next.

HSA (Health Savings Account)

Patients with HSA’s can contribute $3,400 per individual and $6,700 for families each year. This is untaxed money that can be used to cover procedures such as gum grafting. For patients using this option, be sure to discuss payment expectations with your periodontist prior to scheduling the procedure. Some dentists need to be paid directly while other provides can pay your dentist directly.

Monthly Payment Plan

Although not guaranteed, we may offer a payment plan to help ensure that cost does not prevent our patients from receiving the care they deserve. These plans typically require a down payment (50% is fairly common), and will then allow for smaller payments to be made over an agreed upon period of time.
