What are Scale & Root Planing Risks?

Marin Contemporary Perio & Implant Concepts

Scaling and root planing is a common procedure that is performed to halt and reverse the effects of periodontal disease. As is the case with any procedure, there are risks involved in having a scaling and root planing procedure performed; however, not having scaling and root planing performed places you at greater risk of developing periodontal disease.

Although a scale and root planing procedure is performed to reduce your risk of developing oral health issues, it is important to be aware of the risks involved in having this procedure performed. One of the biggest risks associated with scale and root planing is the introduction of bacteria into the bloodstream, which can increase the risk of gum tissue becoming infected. If you currently have a health condition that places you at an increased risk of developing a severe infection, it may be necessary to take antibiotics before and/or after this procedure.

Patients who meet the following qualifications may need to follow antibiotic treatment following the scale and root planing procedure:

  • Impaired immune system
  • Heart issues resulting in elevated risk of endocarditis.
  • Recently had major surgery

Treatment Risks

Treatment risks associated with having the scale and root planing procedure include:

  • Increased risk of infection
  • Post-operative bleeding
  • Post-operative bruising and swelling
  • Post-operative pain
  • Negative reaction to local anesthetic and/or medication
  • Sensitivity to foods and/or beverages that are cold or hot
  • Change in physical appearance of teeth
  • Crown margins become visible
  • Root and/or tooth pain
  • Need to alter oral hygiene self-care practices

The Effects of Periodontal Disease

While it is important to be aware of these risks prior to having a scale and root planing procedure performed, it is equally important to be fully aware of the risks you face if you do not have this procedure performed.

If left untreated, periodontal disease will continue to progress, and symptoms will increase in severity. In the early stage of periodontal disease, you may experience mild symptoms, such as bad breath, gums that are susceptible to bleeding, and/or tooth sensitivity. As the disease progresses and the pockets in your gum deepen, more bacteria are allowed to collect and more severe symptoms will develop, such as receding gums, loosened teeth, deteriorated jaw bone, and loss of teeth.

In addition to the negative impacts on your oral health, periodontal disease is also linked to many other health issues, including stroke, heart disease, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes. While it may be possible to halt or reverse your periodontal disease through other methods, such as lifestyle changes (better oral self-care, more frequent periodontal visits, modified diet, etc.), if your periodontist has recommended a scaling and root planing procedure, it is because they believe immediate and professional intervention is in the best interest of your oral health.

If you have any remaining questions concerning the risks involved in having (or not having) a scale and root planing procedure performed, contact your dentist or periodontist, who will be happy to address your concerns.
