Following a tooth extraction (including wisdom teeth extraction), it is important to avoid smoking for at least the first 72 hours. Failing to wait this minimum amount of time significantly increases your risk of developing a dry socket and/or inflammation, due to the chemical toxins found in cigarette smoke, along with the mechanism involved in inhaling, which can cause the newly formed blood clot to become expelled.
If a dry socket develops, it will typically present as a bad smell in your mouth, followed by pain that increases in intensity. Although the risk of developing a dry socket diminishes significantly after the first 72 hours, this may be a good opportunity to take steps to stop smoking entirely, as doing so will result in improved overall oral and general health. If you are considering quitting smoking, please refer to the following, which details risks associated with smoking or use of tobacco and tips and tricks to help support your efforts.
Oral and Health Risks Associated with Smoking
Use of any type of tobacco product places patients at an increased risk of developing a range of oral health (and general health) issues. Smoking impairs the flow of blood to the gums, which can delay healing and increases an individual’s risk of developing infections, as well as esophageal, throat, and oral cancer.
Additional issues that are more likely to develop due to smoking or tobacco use include:
- Tooth discoloration
- Halitosis (bad breath)
- Increased plaque and tartar buildup
- Increased risk of jawbone deterioration
- Increased risk of leukoplakia
- Increased risk of oral cancer
- Higher risk of developing periodontal disease
- Reduced rate of success following a dental implant
- Healing process following a procedure is delayed
Ways to Stop Smoking
There are several different approaches to assist patients trying to stop smoking and manage nicotine cravings, such as the use of nicotine patches or gum. There are also several types of medication that can help control cravings, some of which are over the counter and others that require a prescription, such as Zyban. If you would prefer to avoid medication, you may also benefit from herbal remedies, such as acupuncture or hypnosis. Many hospitals also offer support groups and smoking cessation classes, which can be taken independent of or in conjunction with drug therapy.
If you are not prepared to stop smoking entirely, it is worthwhile to consider at least reducing the amount that you smoke. While quitting entirely is the best change you can make for your health, reducing smoking to less than half a pack a day (or the equivalent for other types of tobacco) reduces your risk of developing gum disease by half, compared to people who smoke one to two packs a day. Quitting the habit of smoking is difficult, but a tooth extraction may be just the reason you need to make this important change in your life. Doing so will yield many positive benefits, beyond just improved oral health.
