Removal of Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars to erupt, generally appearing around the ages of 17-25. Although most people have their wisdom teeth removed, their removal is not always necessary, though many dental professionals recommend having them removed for a variety of reasons. The most common reason is simply that people do not have enough room in their mouth to accommodate these additional molars.
When this occurs, there are a variety of issues that can develop, including the following:
- Crowding: Untreated wisdom teeth can result in patients developing crowding of their teeth, which is most noticeable among the front teeth. There are several different factors that contribute to teeth crowding in adulthood or after braces have been used, but retained wisdom teeth that have become impacted are one of the leading factors.
- Cyst Formation: When a wisdom tooth becomes impacted, it is not uncommon for non-infectious diseases to form. In particle, cysts can develop inside the jawbone and gradually expand, which can subsequently destroy jawbone or other teeth. Though not common, delaying the removal of wisdom teeth has also been believed to cause tumors to develop.
- Damage to Adjacent Teeth: When there is not enough room to clean around a wisdom tooth, the surrounding teeth cannot receive the type of cleaning they need to remain healthy, which can result in the development of gum disease, decay, and/or bone loss
- Infection: Infection is the most common consequence of impacted wisdom teeth that have not been removed. When there is not enough room for the wisdom teeth to erupt, the tissue surrounding the tooth can become irritated, which can lead to the development of infection which present through symptoms such as sensitivity, pain, and/or swelling.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure
Sedation may be recommended for your procedure. During conscious sedation, your consciousness will be depressed for the duration of the procedure - increasing your state of relaxation, reducing anxiety, and creating a slight amnesic effect - thus helping the patient forget much of the time spent during the procedure. Because of the intensity of the effects, you will not be allowed to drive following the procedure, so be sure to make arrangements to have someone available to drive you home. It is also important to discuss your preferred anesthesia level with your periodontist prior to having your wisdom teeth removed.
Once you are properly sedated, your periodontist will begin removing the wisdom teeth by opening the gum tissue that is located directly over the tooth, and begin removing bone. Once this is complete, the tooth will be extracted, or, if necessary, cut into smaller pieces and then removed. Your procedure will likely require stitches, which generally take 3-5 days to dissolve.
Once the tooth has been removed and the anesthesia has worn off, you will be allowed to leave with a responsible adult to watch over you. Your periodontist will prescribe pain medication if necessary, but if possible, it is best to stick with over the counter anti- inflammatory medications.
It is a good idea to plan on sticking to a soft food diet following your procedure, slowly introducing new foods as you begin to heal.
Removal Procedural Cost
Like most common dental procedures, the cost of your procedure will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case, how many teeth need to be removed, where you are located geographically, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. Our practice does accept most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional), and PPO out-of-network.
Our staff will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so you can determine what your benefits will be. Or, if you are not currently covered by insurance or have concerns about the final cost, our staff will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements.
