One Day Dental Implants

Marin Contemporary Perio & Implant Concepts

Dental implants are a great way to restore missing teeth. Here, we are going to review one day dental implants and discuss how they are different from traditional implants.

What is a one day dental implant?

One day dental implants are implants that are placed and restored with a crown immediately. There are some benefits to having one day dental implants placed as opposed to traditional implants but they also have a higher failure rate than traditional implants.

What is the difference between one day dental implants and traditional implants?

The biggest difference is the one that appeals to most people, there is no period of time that the patient is left without a tooth. With same day dental implants, the implant crown is placed on to the implant immediately after implant placement surgery, a process sometimes referred to as “immediate loading”.

With traditional implants, the implant is surgically placed and allowed to heal for six months before being restored with an implant crown. This healing time is crucial as it gives the implant time to integrate with the jawbone. It’s never fun to spend six months missing teeth but the success rate of traditional implants is substantially higher than that of same day dental implants.

Who is a candidate for same day dental implants?

The overall health of the patient plays a huge role in determining if they are a candidate for same day dental implants. Patients suffering from systemic diseases such as diabetes or osteoporosis will not likely be able to receive same day dental implants. Patients who are healthy and have good oral hygiene may benefit from same day dental implants and will have a higher success rate.

If the patient has sufficient bone structure and does not require a bone graft or sinus lift, same day implants can be recommended. The health of the patient and the bone will help the implant integrate with the jawbone in a timely manner. The implant will take much longer to integrate in patients with systemic diseases since the bone will be slower to regenerate making for a higher rate of failure.

Patients who smoke will also have a difficult time healing after surgery. If a smoking patient is considering implant surgery, they are encouraged to stop smoking before having an implant placed.

How is the same day implant procedure performed?

As with a traditional implant, implant surgery is done using a local anesthetic. The implant is placed and instead of waiting six months for the bone to heal and integrate around the implant, the implant crown is loaded onto the implant at the same appointment.

For patients missing multiple teeth, two implants are placed and a bridge is loaded immediately to replace 3 to 4 missing teeth.

Same-day implants are particularly appealing to patients missing a front tooth or having a front tooth extracted. It allows them to leave the office the same day with a brand new tooth!

If you are considering same-day implants, speak with your dentist to make sure that you find the best oral surgeon or Periodontist available to you.
