Same day dental implants are a great option for healthy patients with sufficient burn structure. A same day implant is placed directly following tooth extraction, either at the same appointment or within two weeks. In some cases, a crown or bridge is placed on the implant immediately to restore the tooth or teeth. This is called immediate loading and is often preferred by patients.
What are the benefits of an immediate dental implant?
The most obvious benefit for having an implant placed immediately is the shorter timeframe for treatment. Implants need six months to heal as is and any additional time can feel like agony. For patients that are healthy and have a sufficient bone structure, an implant placed immediately after extraction can be very beneficial and save them 3 to 6 months of additional healing time.
Having the implant crown or bridge immediately loaded onto the implant also saves time and money since the patient does not have to have an essix, flipper, or temporary restoration while they heal.
What is the procedure for an immediate dental implant?
If you have a tooth that has been deemed hopeless and needs to be extracted, your dentist may recommend an immediate dental implant. They will refer you to an oral surgeon or periodontist for treatment unless they have one on site.
- At your first appointment with the doctor that will be extracting your tooth and placing your implant, they will perform an exam on the tooth in question and take any necessary x-rays, CT scans, and study models. At this is that they will also review how the surgery will proceed and what anesthetics are used. They will need a full medical history complete with current medications that you’re taking and any allergies.
- On the day of your extraction and implant surgery, the analytical anesthetic will be administered and your doctor will extract the tooth or teeth and inspect and clean the extraction site to make sure that there is no infection in the surrounding tissue. If necessary, a bone graft and or a gum graft will be completed to ensure implant success. Once your implant is placed, your doctor will be able to determine if you can receive a crown immediately or if the site needs to heal first.
- Two weeks after your implant surgery, you will return to your doctor's office for a post op check up. If you were unable to have an immediately loaded crown, your doctor will have you schedule an appointment to have your permanent restoration placed in 14 weeks.
Your doctor will give you detailed post op instructions to follow while your implant heals and integrates with the bone. It is important that you realize the bone structure is not solid and strong and you must avoid biting on your new tooth for 3 to 4 months.
