Emergency Tooth Extractions

Marin Contemporary Perio & Implant Concepts

Although a tooth extraction is typically performed as part of a larger oral health treatment plan, there are instances when an emergency san rafael tooth extraction is necessary. There are several reasons why a tooth may need to be immediately extracted, but the most common reasons are due to untreated periodontal disease that has resulted in an abscess forming around your teeth or gums, an infection, trauma to your jaw, crowded teeth, impacted wisdom teeth, and/or a tooth that has broken and is no longer able to be repaired. If these issues have progressed to the point of causing physical pain, this pain will typically only increase in severity until the tooth is removed.

It is best to avoid relying on an emergency room to provide emergency dental care, as this is not their area of expertise. As such, there is a decent chance they will not perform the extraction, but will instead provide palliative support until you are able to have the tooth professionally extracted. If you have not already, talk with your regular dentist or periodontist about what type of emergency care they provide. Most practices offer emergency support, but if yours does not, ask if they have any recommendations for who you should contact if you find yourself in a situation that requires emergency care.

Prior to calling to see if an emergency tooth extraction is necessary, be prepared to have the following information ready:

  • Your contact information
  • Reason why you feel the tooth should be extracted
  • Timeline of when the issues began and where they are now
  • Insurance information if possible
  • Payment information if possible

Avoiding the Need for Emergency Tooth Extraction

There are several reasons why it is important to do everything you can to avoid an emergency tooth extraction, one of the biggest being the cost involved. Having a tooth extracted is typically much higher than if the procedure were to occur as part of a treatment plan. If you have dental insurance, some of the costs may be offset; however, emergency care in general will cost more than traditional treatment options, so it is best to avoid seeking this type of care if possible. It is also in your best interest to have a tooth extracted by a trained professional and not have to rely on an emergency room doctor removing the tooth. Although they may be qualified to perform this procedure, it is generally not their area of expertise.

Although it is not possible to completely reduce your risk of experiencing an unexpected accident, emergency tooth extractions are commonly necessary because an underlying issue was left untreated for too long. If you are experiencing symptoms that appear to be progressing, schedule a visit with your dentist or periodontist as soon as possible. This is also why it is important to schedule regular examinations (at least every six months) where your dentist or periodontist can perform a professional cleaning and evaluate your oral health to identify issues and provide treatment before emergency care is necessary.
